That's a Great Question! - Here Are Our Answers:

(Most recent questions are first)

Do you guys have a cheer team?

Answer:
No we don’t have a cheer team. Those are usually associated with football teams, and in our school district only Terra Nova and Jefferson have football programs. We have had a spirit squad in the past and can have one again, if there are enough students interested.

Thanks!

How do we get our Student Vue access information to see our grades?

Answer:
I know you're not the only one with this question! The user name and password are the same ones you use for the school computer network. They should be printed on top of your class schedule. If they aren't, any of your teachers can get them for you when they’re taking roll.

Thanks!

Does the lunch menu posted on the JUHSD site stay the same for the whole school year? Or does it change every month, or on some other schedule?

Answer:
This is a good question. The menu changes every week. The menu is always announced in the bulletin that comes every Monday and Thursday. You can see it on the school website, at this link.

Thanks!

Is the track open to the community for jogging? If so, what hours is it available?

Answer:
Hi! The track is open to the public weekdays from after school (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 2:35 PM, Wednesday 12:50 PM) to sunset. On the weekends, it is open from 9 or 10 in the morning to about 4 or 5 in the afternoon. Please note that we now have a track team that uses the track for practice after school. You can use the track while they're practicing, but if you're in the way you'll have to leave.

Thanks!

How do I find out how many Community Service hours I have? Is it posted on StudentVue?

Answer:
This is a great question. To find out how many hours you have, you can ask Ms. O'Leary in the library, or anyone in the counseling hall. Having the hours visible to students and parents in Synergy is an excellent idea and we will see if we can have that feature added.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm a freshman and I was wondering if we can have fundrasing for OHS to have football and cheer?

Answer:
That's a good question! School football programs are VERY expensive. They can often cost as much as all the other sports a school offers, combined. (A football program can typically cost at least $500,000 per year. Insurance costs make up a big part of that expense.) In addition, Oceana is a pretty small school, and that makes it more difficult to ensure the numbers of interested students needed to field a team. But, even Westmoor, the largest school in the district, doesn't have a football team. Because of financial concerns, our school board decided that our district would only have football programs at two schools, Terra Nova and Jefferson. But, we have had cheer/spirit squads in the past. If you're interested in starting one again, please talk to Mr. Tang or Mr. Lai, our Co-Athletic Directors.

Thanks!

How can I ask to use the dance room? Where do I go? Can I use it on Wednesday?

Answer:
To use the Dance Room, you sign up on a calendar in the front office. You can use it during lunch and after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, until 3:30PM.

Thanks!

Can freshmen tryout for junior varsity basketball?

Answer:
In general, junior varsity id for 9th & 10th graders and varsity is for 11th and 12 graders. However, 9th & 10th graders who're really good players can play on the varsity team. Thanks!

How do I start a club? Can I start one for the new school year even though I am an incoming freshman?

Answer:
Hey! Sure you can start a club. You can do it at any time in the school year. All you need is: 1. A good idea, 2. A teacher or administrator to be your sponsor, and 3. Twenty-five kids to sign a petition saying they're interested. It's really not hard.

Thanks!

Hi! I was wondering if we are ever going to have a cheerleading squad for Oceana's basketball team. I know many girls who would interested to do this & I think we should have one or a club.

Answer:
Hi! Whe had a sort of cheer/spirit squad a few years ago because there was enough interest. You can start practically any sort of club you want if you can get enough other kids to sign up (See the question above).

Thanks!

Hi I'm a freshman going into sophomore year and I was wondering when you can sign up for girls basketball? And when are the tryouts?

Answer:
Hi! Basketball sign-ups are at the beginning of the school year in August or September. There'll be announcements at the time. Have a great summer!

Thanks!

When will we find out what are class schedule is for this coming school year?

Answer:
You get your schedule from you advisory teacher on the first day of school when you turn in your registration forms.

Thanks!

Will there be a sophomore orientation?

Answer:
No, not like the one we have for incoming 9th graders. You don't really need one because you're familiar with Oceana and what makes us different.

Thanks!

Are you going to miss the seniors?

Answer:
I already told you: yes, we'll miss you!

Thanks!

What is the finals schedule for freshmen? Do this year's freshmen have a summer reading?

Answer:
The finals schedule is the same for everyone: Wednesday, Thursday , and Friday are all Wednesday schedule days. Wednesday is a 1-3-5 day, Thursday is a 2-4-6 day, and Friday is a 1-3-5 day.

All the summer assignments are posted here.

Thanks!

Why do we call married teachers like Ms. Scher "Ms." when married women go by "Mrs."?

The short answer is that the old term "Ms." was revived as a way to make forms of address more equal. People thought it was sexist to have the forms of address for women indicate their marital status when we didn't do that for men. Or as a smart woman told me, "We say "Ms." because it's nobody's business if we're married or not." For a good--but longer--explaination of the subject, go here.

Thanks!

Do you like elfs or leprechauns?

Answer:
That's an excellent question. I prefer elves. Leprechauns strike me as sneaky and underhanded and somewhat unconvincing. I just don't trust 'em.

Thanks!

Are you going to miss the seniors?

Answer:
Oh, yes. Graduation is always bittersweet. We're glad and proud to see you move onto the next stage of your lives, but we'll miss seeing you every day. That's why we like when you visit or email us in the years to come and let us know how you're doing and what you've been up to.

Thanks!

What languages do you offer? How high does your GPA need to be in order to be accepted?

Answer:
Thanks for the questions. We currently offer Spanish and Filipino (Tagalog). The Filipino class is tought after school on the Oceana campus by instructors from Skyline College, and if you complete the class you get both high school and college credit!

As to your GPA question, there is no grade requirement to enroll at Oceana.

Thanks!

What is the scehudle for freshmen during senior exibition?

Answer:
I'm glad you asked. 9th, 10th, and 11th graders meet with their advisories at 8am. There, you'll each be given a schedule showing which Exhibitions you're assigned to watch.

Thanks!

How much is a bus pass without reduced/free lunch?

Answer:
According to the SamTrans site, full-fare passes for stufents are $36.

Thanks!

If you are taking an Interm that is at the school, is the schedule the same as far as breaks and lunch? Do they still serve lunch during the week? Or, you bring your own?

Answer:
Good question. The cafeteria serves food for lunch and break during Interim week. When your class meets on campus, your teacher will schedule your day to allow you to buy food.

Thanks!

I heard a rumor that there might be a volleyball club next year. is it true?

Answer:
You can make it true! Students can start almost any sort of club they like. All you need is enough students to say they're interested and a teacher to advise it. (In this case, you'd also need equipment and a placew to play.) I suggest you talk to Ms. Corgas about how to best make this rumor come true.

Thanks!

What do you do in swimming? What if you really can't swim, is there an alternate activity?

Answer:
These are good questions. Any PE class is going to have students with a wide range of swimming experience and ability. Our district thinks it's important that every graduate have at least the basic swimming skills necessary to survive an accident in the water. The way our swimming unit works here at Oceana, more advanced swimmers both work on improving their swimming skills and helping classmates who have little or no experience in the water. Everybody participates, and the unit lasts about three weeks. Don't worry if you can't swim. You won't be the only one and our P.E. teachers are very nice.

Thanks!

Hi! I signed up to be get a shadow(s) and when I was supposed to have a shadow she never came......so I was wondering would I get a shadow again?

Answer:
Hi! Thanks for volunteering to host a shadow, and I'm sorry you got stood up! There are not going to be many more 8th graders visiting at this late point in the year, but if there is, and your schedule fits, we'd be happy to have them shadow you. Since you didn't include you name in your question, please come see Mr. Weiss he knows who you are.

Thanks!

I have a 6th grader and I'm looking into OHS as 1 of the choices that she might be interested in for High School. But as I was looking at sports, it didn't say that you guys have Volleyball, is that right? Hope to hear from you guys soon.

Answer:
Hi! Of the four regular high schools in the district, neither Oceana nor Jefferson currently have volleyball teams. Terra Nova and Westmoor do.

Thanks!

Where is the lost and found? And did you happen to find a pink folder in the library by any chance?

Answer:
Oh no! Sorry that you lost your folder, but we haven't seen it. If stuff gets left behind in the library, we hang onto it for a couple days. If it hasn't been reclaimed, we take it to the lost & found in the front office.

Thanks!

Can I buy an another bus pass, if I lost my other one?

Answer:
The good news is that you can certainly buy another pass. See Ms. Carion. The bad news is that you have to pay for the new one. Sorry.

Thanks!

When are acceptance letters for upcoming freshman usually mailed?

Answer:
That's a good question! Registration forms are due to the JUHSD District Office by at the beginning of February (the exact date is different each year.) The DO tells us that school assignmnet letters will go out sometime in March, but they're not certain about the date. You can call them at 650-550-7900 for more information.

Thanks!

Why can't we get new jerseys for basketball?

Answer:
Basketball uniforms are expensive! The coaches & players have to do a lot of fundraising to buy them, and that's too much work to do every year. The varsity teams got new uniforms just last year, so it isn't going to happen again this year. When the varsity team gets new uniforms, their old ones are handed down to the JV team. (Kinda like being the younger sibling, huh?)

Thanks!

Why doesn't Oceana have a baseball team?

Answer:
We've had baseball in the past. If you're interested, talk to Mr. Tang.

Thanks!

What should your g.p.a be for a college prep school like Oceana?

Answer:
This is an interesting question. Other than needing at least a 2.0 to participate in sports, Oceana doesn't have a specific GPA requirement. However, I'm guessing you want to know what high school GPA a college or university wants you to have. There's no simple answer other than "as high as possible." Colleges want to know that you are able to work hard and meet your commitments, and that you have taken advantage of what your school has to offer. Talk to Ms. Collins to make sure you're doing what you need to do to make your post-high school plans a reality.

Thanks!

Why do we have group tests in Algebra?

Answer:
I'm sure a lot of people wonder the same thing. Mr Duca tells me that there're a few reasons: since students work in groups the "Group Test" shows how well students can work together, it addresses one of the Oceana outcomes, Cooperative Worker, and students should help one another if students in their group do not understand. Finally, the group test is only one portion of the test that they take, the other is the individual test.

Thanks!

Hi, I'm a freshman and I was wondering if we have the same advisor now, for our four years at Oceana?

Answer:
Hi. Ususally, you have one advisor for 9th & 10th grade and one for 11th & 12th grade. Also, in 11th & 12th grade, you can close one of the themed advisories, if you like.

Thanks!

Where is the band room?

Answer:
It's next to the gym, on the left. (If you're at the weight room, you went right instead.) The Band Room is where Ms. Corgas' advisory meets.

Thanks!

Do you like 1Direction?

Answer:
This is a good question. (Well, sorta.) No, I'm sorry, but I don't like 1Direction. I like good music.

Thanks!

Is the garden/nursery still open to new member for community service?

Answer:
Yes! Just drop by after school on Wednesdays. Wear shoes that you don' t mind getting dirty.

Thanks!

Do you know of any community service opportunities that are done during school hours?

Answer:
An important question. Community service hours must be done outside of the school day. That's one reason we have a short day on Wednesday, to allow your some time during the day to do community service. More questions? See Ms. Ambrose.

Thanks!

If you fail this semester of health but you pass next semester, do you not have to take it over? Because on the planner it says you only need one semester.

Answer:
An interesting question. You only need one semester of health to graduate, so, no, you don't have to retake the semester you faild. However, you will have an "F" on your transcripts and it could affect your GPA.

Thanks!

Can you switch your interim class? If so, how do you change your class?

Answer:
Sorry, but Interim classes can't be changed. If you turned your request form in on time, then you got one of your choices. Sorry!

Thanks!

How many classes do you have to fail to be held back freshman year?

Answer:
If you're asking this question, you probably need to talk to Ms. Collins or Ms. Peinado, but the short answer is: both semesters of Humanities (that is, four classes.)

Thanks!

Does Oceana have a talent show? Could we ever have one?

Answer:
Sure, we can have a talent show. We don't have one regularly scheduled, but we have had them in the past and I thought they were awesome. If you're interested in having one again, talk to Ms. Holland (because she'd be excited about it) and Ms. Bookwalter & members of the student government.

Thanks!

Why doesn't Oceana have a swim team?

Answer:
We get lots of questions like this one. A small school like Oceana has a hard time offering lots of different sports. Aside from issues of funding, if we don't have enough students interested in a particular sport--and someone who can coach it--then then we can't field a team. Talk to Ms. Corgas if you're interested in a sport we don't offer.

Thanks!

Does your school have parent-teacher conferences? If I want to see the student's teacher, how can I set up the time?

Answer:
We sure do. If you want to talk to one of your student's teachers, the fastest way is to email them. All the faculty emails are here. If you want to have a conference with all of your student's teachers, the easiest way to arrange it is through the Academic Counselors. Call or email Ms. Torres for grades 10-12 and Ms. Collins for 9th graders.

Thanks!

Why are some kids moving to Terra Nova?

Answer:
This is a frequent question. Kids change schools for different reasons. Some common ones are: the new school is easier to get to, the new school has some program the student wants to take advantage of, or for social reasons. Every year we have some students who transfer to Terra Nova, for those reasons and others. We also have students transfer to Westmoor, Jefferson, Thornton, and outside our district. We also have students transferring into Oceana. The vast majority of students stay here at Oceana, however.

Thanks!

Will Oceana or any other Jeff district school other than TN and Jeff ever have a football team? becuase if not isn't a waste to have a football field w/o a football team?

Answer:
That's a sensible question. Oceana and Westmoor both have new football fields and no football programs. This is because the bond that voters passed in 2006 to pay for improved athletic fields specified that all four schools get the exact same facilities. So each school has a new track and a new football/soccer field. It's not as wasteful as you might think, however, because the district rents out its fields to local soccer and football teams and is able to recoup some of the costs of building and maintaining the fields.

Thanks!

Why are you so awesome? It's rather overwhelming. Does it get tiring being as amazing as you are?

Answer:
Thanks for this very important question. I know it can be overwhelming at times, and I'm sorry for that. Just know that I try to use my powers for good, not evil, and that I'm doing all for the kids, because they're our future and stuff.

Thanks!

How long have you been a librarian at Oceana?

Answer:
Mr. Weiss became the OHS librarian in Fall 1996. This is his 20th year as librarian. Before that, he taught 9th grade Humanities. He's also taught Digital Design, 11th grade Humanities, and Film Analysis.

Thanks!

Who answers these questions? is it a group or an indivdual, because I thought it was Mr. Weiss but I'm not sure.

Answer:
Mr. Weiss answers these questions. He occasionally has to ask someone else for some information, but those instances are rare because he is, after all, a librarian, with all of the powers, skills, and authority that position conveys.

Thanks!

Can you transfer to a higher math class as a freshmen? Bcause I'm in algebra 1 and it's boring and goes too slow with the problems.

Answer:
Being in a class that's too easy is a waste of time. You should talk to a counselor as soon as possible. Don't wait!

Thanks!

Is the wrestling team still open for new members? And are there any girls on the wrestling team?

Answer:
You asked just in time! This is the last week new members can join the team. We do have one girl on the team, and more are welcome. If you're interested, you should talk to Mr. Tang as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Hi, I hope you are doing well. Can you please let me know if there will be any possibilities to re-take my school ID photo? I dislike the picture.

Answer:
Hi! I'm doing well, thanks. I'm sorry to say that we've already had the picture re-take day. So, you're stuck with the ID photo you have until next year. (I'm sure it isn't half as goofy as my 9th grade ID card photo. Come by and see it in the library.)

Thanks!

What do you do in the weight room course during PE?

Answer:
Good question! The weight room unit in PE lasts about three weeks. You learn the safe operation ofl the machines and exercises to work all the different muscle groups. A few years ago we got a generous donation, so we now have a very nicely equipped weight room.

Thanks!

Do some students with license drive to school? If so, how does that process work?

Answer:
Thanks for asking. Students do drive to school. The rules for driving and parking are in the OHS student planner:

" All student vehicles must be parked in designated student parking areas with a permit visibly displayed. Parking permits can be obtained from the attendance office. Parking privileges may be revoked for reckless driving, parking in a fire lane, parking in a handicapped area without proper permits, leaving campus in car during break and lunch, etc. Students are not to visit the parking lots or be in vehicles during the school day, including break and lunch. School personnel may search cars parked on school property."

Thanks!

Why doesn't Oceana have a football team?

Answer:
Excellent question! Because of financial concerns, our school district decided that our district would have football programs at two schools, Terra Nova and Jefferson

Thanks!

In P.E. I know you do a swiming course. I was wondering how long it lasts and if you really can't swim at all. Can you do a alternative activity in the gym?

Answer:
These are good questions. Any PE class is going to have students with a wide range of swimming experience and ability. Our district thinks it's important that every graduate have at least the basic swimming skills necessary to survive an accident in the water. How many students in Oceana high school?

Answer:
Right now, we've got about 650 of the world's finest students.

Thanks!

Does Oceana have a Sadie Hawkins dance? If not where can I suggest the idea?

Answer:
No, we don't have a Sadie Hawkins dance, but you can talk to the Student Activities Director, Ms. Delman in room 211, about your idea.

Thanks!

How is your day?

Answer:
Thanks for asking! I was feeling a little down because I have a bit of a cold, but seeing your question first thing on a Monday morning made me feel really good!

Thanks!

Can we pay with check for the Winter Ball Tickets? If so, who do we make it out to?

Answer:
Sure, you can pay with a check! Just make it out to "Oceana High School."

Thanks!

Does Oceana offer any after school SAT Prep classes?

Answer:
That's a good question. We will be offering after-school SAT prep, starting in mid to late January. Look for announcements in a few weeks for more information about times and place, etc. or talk to Ms. Schaudel.

Thanks!

Does Oceana periodically publish an honor roll throughout the school year?

Answer:
Thanks for the good question. Oceana has an Honor Roll award ceremony for each grade level at the beginning of each semester, just after the grades from the previous semester are finalized.

Thanks!

What is Harvest Faire?

Answer:
Harvest Faire is in the fall, and is an opportunity for clubs and other student organizations to raise money by selling food and attract new members. (Our lunch period is longer that day.)

Thanks!

What language courses does Oceana offer... are there any other courses besides Tagalog and Spanish? Like Japanese?

Answer:
That's a good question. In the past we've offered French as well as Spanish and Tagalog, but right now those are the only two we have. We're a small school, so the types of courses we can offer is more limited.

Thanks!

How many rallies does Oceana have?

We have 4 rallies/assemblies per year.

Thanks!

How many dances does Oceana have?

We have three or four dances per year.

Thanks!

Does Oceana have homecoming?

We do not have homecoming (because we don't have a football program.)

Thanks!

Do students at Oceana usually dress up for Halloween?

Answer:
They sure do! Staff does to! Click on the "OHS Photo Galleries" link on the right side of the home page go to our Flickr page to see pictures of previous years.

Thanks!

Does Oceana have a dress code?

Answer:
We do have a dress code. In March 2015 a new code was approved by the Academic Council. It was created by a committee of students and adults and is printed in the student planner:

Oceana High School Dress Code
Oceana recognizes that students in high school (a critical time of development and self-discovery) have the right to dress in a manner that expresses their personality, while also feeling safe and comfortable. This dress code is not intended to dictate students’ personal expression, but to ensure Oceana is a safe environment for learning. For that reason, we expect all students to dress appropriately for a learning environment. Clothing that poses a dangerous threat to anyone or is disrespectful or hurtful to a particular person, group, belief, or orientation is never allowed. In the enforcement of this code, students will be spoken to privately and respectfully.
  1. Hoods and hats are allowed during class at the discretion of the classroom teacher.
  2. Students must wear shoes or sandals. For safety reasons, teachers may require closed toe shoes in specific circumstances.
  3. Clothing should allow student to move comfortably without showing undergarments or private areas of the body. Anything that may be construed as underwear should not be visible.
  4. Clothing, jewelry, or accessories which are dangerous (for example, sharp spikes) are not allowed.
  5. Clothing may not denigrate or objectify others based on race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, gender, or gender identity.
  6. Clothing may not promote or endorse the use of offensive language, alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs, or encourage illegal or violent activities.

Thanks!

How many shadows can one student have in one day? I was told I can have 2 a day.

Answer:
Thanks for asking. Shadowing is one-on-one. Mr. Weiss in the Library is in charge of shadowing, so see him if you want to volunteer or have more questions.

Thanks!

When do freshmen pick their Interims? And when do we find out what Interim that we got assigned to?

Answer:
This is a good question. On 29 Oct all students will get a packet describing the Interims to be offered. Sign-ups are due 8 Nov. You'll find out which Interim you're assigned to in Advisory, on 3 Dec.

Thanks!

Can I take Tagalog instead of Spanish next year? I'm a freshman and I heard that you can take Tagalog instead of Spanish but I'm not so sure...

Answer:
Yes, you can. Two semesters of Tagalog will equal two years of foreign language. This will satisfy the two year language requirement for CSU and UC. But, UC does "recommend" three years of foreign language, so keep that in mind.

Thanks!

At student orientation I signed up to tryout for basketball, but I didn't go to the meeting that they had earlier in September. Is it possible for me to still join the girls basketball team?

Answer:
You bet! Just talk to Mr. Tang as soon as possible.

Thanks!

Is there space still open to do community service at the garden/nursery after school?

Answer:
Absolutely! Just come by after school on Wednesdays! See Mr. Reidy for more volunteer opportunities in the garden.

Thanks!

We signed up for Tagalog classes but when does that start?

Answer:
This is a very good question. Along with Skyline College, we have been offering an after school Tagalog class every other year and should have had it this year. Unfortunately, due to the retirement of both the dean of foreign languages at Skyline and the retirement of the Tagalog teacher, Skyline was not able to offer that class at Oceana this year. They have committed to offering it next year.

Thanks!

What are some mental health services offered at Oceana?

Answer:
This is an important question. Oceana has a Wellness Counselor, Melissa Ambrose, who has a Masters of Social Work. She sees students who would like counseling on an as-needed basis and for crisis counseling. She also runs counseling groups. Each year, Ms. Ambrose supervises a Masters of Social Work graduate intern who sees students on a weekly basis for counseling. Additionally, Oceana has between two and three graduate guidance counseling interns each year who are supervised by Elaine Collins, our Guidance Counselor, who is also a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Each of these interns has a small case load of students whom they see for weekly counseling. Sometimes there are mental health counseling interns from outside agencies like Pyramid Alternatives who are placed at Oceana to see students. Ms. Ambrose also has many referrals for students and their families who want counseling outside of school. Students who don't have insurance may qualify for free counseling the Daly City Youth Health Center.

Thanks!

How do I log into ParentVue? How do I get an activation key? How does my husband get one? And - my daughter forgot her password, and the system won't send her a "forgotten password" email. It says "email address not found". What does that mean? Is this a bug? (Using Firefox.)

Answer:
These are common questions. The district office has told us that letters with the activation keys are going out this week. Your daughter's access codes are the same as her username and password for the campus network. If she's forgotten them, she can get them from any of her teachers or here in the library from me.

Thanks!

I'm trying to find out the lunch menu ahead of time, maybe for a week. Is there one available on the website or the school? My daughter is in the pre-pay program, but would like to bring lunch from home once in a while, depending on what's on the menu at the cafeteria.

Answer:
Good question! Our cafeteria menu is at the top of our Bulletin, which is posted on our web site every Monday and Thursday. Just click in the "Bulletin" link on the right side of the home page!

Thanks!

For senior portraits, would it just be 2 outfits for cap and gown outfit and yearbook outfit? because that's all I would like to take.

Answer:
That's an interesting question. You need to contact the company that does our picture, Lifetouch. Their contact info is right here.

Thanks!

How many pages of homework for each class every day? If parents request, can the teachers give more homework to student?

Answer:
That's a good question. Homework is better measured in hours rather than pages. For 9th graders, they'll have homework for three classes: Humanities every night, and either Science or Math every night. How long it takes to complete the homework varies from student to student, but a rough estimate is between 1 and 2 hours. Students have more homework as they move up through the grades.

If you think your child doesn't have enough work to do, please contact her teachers directly or her counselor. The 9th grade academic counselor is Ms. Collins and the 10-12 counselor is Ms. Torres. Ms. Peinado is the vice-principal who oversees the counseling department. All the contact information can be found here:

http://ohs.juhsd.net/email.html

Thanks for your question!

Thanks!
