Alternative School Status Oceana is a public school with alternative school status. Some of the unique aspects of our alternative school include: our house structure, humanities, interims, advisories, a time waiver that allows early release Wednesdays for student access to community service opportunities and staff professional development time, shared leadership through our Academic Council, social justice curriculum, and unique graduation requirements.
Site-Based Management As a site-based managed school, Oceana has a system of shared leadership where faculty, staff, students, and parents participate in major academic and policy decisions. This is mainly done through our Academic Council (an expanded version of which serves as our School Site Council.)
Humanities Oceana High School’s Humanities program combines the traditional high school subjects of English Language Arts and Social Science into a single subject. Students develop reading and writing skills while studying different novels, autobiographies, short stories, and poetry that are closely tied to different historical events.
9/10 House The 9/10 House is a cohort of students who have the same Humanities and Science teacher and stay together for both 9th and 10th grade.
Unique Graduation Requirements In addition to more standard graduation requirements, Oceana also requires students to pass Senior Exhibition and complete Community Service hours.
Senior Exhibition Senior Exhibition is a year-long research project that is an Oceana graduation requirement. Each student completes a 15 to 30 page paper focused on an Essential Question chosen by that student. The Essential Question deals with a controversial and impactful issue in contemporary society.
Community Service Community service is volunteer time intended to enhance the greater community as well as OHS students’ lives. In standard years, 100 hours are required to graduate.
