We are excited to share that Jefferson High School will soon begin construction on a new, state-of-the-art gymnasium and outdoor pool for our students.

Demolition of the existing gym is scheduled to begin around June 1, 2025, and is expected to continue for approximately 2-3 months. Following demolition, construction of the new facilities will commence and is anticipated to be completed by summer 2027.

We are committed to minimizing disruption as much as possible and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. The expected work hours will be 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. This project represents an important investment in our students and community, and we look forward to sharing updates as work progresses.

Overview of Project

Why are we building a new Jefferson High School (JHS) Gym & Pool?
- Though the old gymnasium holds a long history and is beloved by the staff and alumni, the current gym needs seismic retrofitting and after a lot of analysis, the cost of retrofitting is significant and ⅔ the costs of building a new gym. While the team tried to keep the same look and feel of the current gym, it was not possible. With the help of subcommittees, the new JHS gym and pool will fulfill the needs and culture of current and future students and staff at Jefferson High School. In hopes of creating a fresh, renewed, and exciting campus life, we welcome the new JHS gym and pool!
When will construction begin and for how long?
- The construction crews will begin to mobilize (set up trailers, fencing, pathways, toilets , set up work areas) on the site June 1, 2025. Demolition will begin near the end of June and last for about 2 months, followed by shoring and preparations for the build which will go into fall.
- When will construction begin and when will it be finished?
After demolition and the shoring is complete (Summer /Fall of 2025) the construction of the building will begin.
- This is scheduled to start late 2025 and is expected to be complete by summer 2027.
What time of day will the demolition/construction operation be?
- Construction hours will be between 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday.

Who is paying for the new building?
- The construction is being paid by bonds funds and grants

Information for Students/Staff/Families

How will I drop-off/pick-up my child?
- During morning drop-off times, both the Bruno Ave. and Mission St. entrances will be open to ease traffic flow.
- Outside of drop-off hours during construction hours, only the Mission St. entrance will remain open. The Bruno Ave. The entrance will be closed for safety and construction access.
Please help us ensure a smooth and efficient Drop-Off and Pick-Up process by:
- Following posted signage, cooperating with staff directing traffic, being mindful of your time and that of fellow parents/guardians.
Where can I park? How much parking will be available?
- Parking on site will be limited, as a portion of the lot will be fenced off for construction. Parking will be prioritized for staff first, followed by students based on grade level.
How will it affect campus life?
- Campus life will be affected during construction, but we are committed to minimizing the impact as much as possible. Indoor athletic events will primarily be held as away games, with a few exceptions that will be hosted at alternate sites. Outdoor sports—including baseball, softball, soccer, track, and football—will continue to take place on the school’s outdoor fields. School rallies will be held on the football field. PE classes will still be conducted; however, students will not be required to dress out for class during this time.
Safety
- Fencing will be installed around the construction site to ensure the safety of students and staff. The site will be enclosed along the maintenance road, with gates at both ends to allow emergency access for fire trucks and other vehicles. These gates will remain closed at all other times. All fenced areas will be off-limits to non-construction personnel. Designated pathways will be maintained between the school and the construction fence to ensure access to the practice gym, athletic fields, and for emergency evacuations.
Will new walking paths during construction be ADA compliant?
- Yes, the new paths are designed to be ADA compliant. There will be both a ramp and a staircase providing access to the fields and small gym from the school, and both can be reached via the covered walkways.

Community/Neighbors

How much noise will I expect to hear?

We are committed to minimizing disruption as much as possible.
- you can expect some noise during demolition and the construction of the shell.
Will the roads be blocked? How much traffic will I expect?
- The Bruno Gate will be closed between drop-off and pick-up times.
- Traffic flow should remain about the same, as all other school gates will be open as they have been in the past for pick up and drop off.
How does the new JHS Gym/Pool benefit me?
- This will be a beautiful space for students and staff, as well as a valuable asset to the entire community.
