    Dear Parents/Guardians:

    California’s academic standards—the things we want students to know and be able to do—are designed so students graduate ready for college and a career. One way we measure their progress is through the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments. Students across California in grades 3–8 and high school take these assessments each spring. These tests were created specifically to gauge each student’s performance in English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics, and science. These tests measure the skills called for by the academic standards, including the ability to write clearly, think critically, and solve problems.

    Because CAASPP tests are given statewide, they provide an opportunity to measure the skills of all students against the same academic standards. Given online, the tests are computer-adaptive, allowing more precise measurement of individual skills.

    This year, your student will take the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for ELA  on March 20-21-22 from 8am-10am and mathematics  on March 27-28-29 from 8am-10am .  Jefferson High School will conduct a school wide practice March 8-9 and March 15-16.  Students are encouraged to visit for more opportunities to practice for the test.

    Smarter Balanced Assessments

    The Smarter Balanced ELA and mathematics tests reflect California’s rigorous academic standards and allow students to demonstrate analytical writing and critical thinking skills as well as their knowledge of facts.

    To learn more about these tests, please visit CDE’s Test Score Guide Web site at, which provides informative guides and test score descriptions as well as sample test items at different levels of difficulty.

    Another great resource are the Practice and Training Tests, which can be found on the CDE’s Smarter Balanced Practice and Training Tests Web page at Here, parents can experience the kinds of questions that students will encounter on the tests.

    The results of this test will be used as the student’s Early Assessment Program (EAP) status. The Early Assessment Program (EAP) is designed to provide students, their families, and high schools with early signals about students’ readiness for college-level English and mathematics. The California State University (CSU) and participating California Community Colleges (CCC) will use student results from the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments as a student’s’ EAP status in English and mathematics. The release of the results does not affect the student’s application for admission.  Results are only used to determine placement of students after they have been admitted to the university.     Lastly, the Jefferson Union High School District would like to inform you that Section 852 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations permits a parent or guardian to submit to the school annually a written request to excuse his or her child from any or all parts of any test provided pursuant to Education Code Section 60640 for the school year. If a parent or guardian submits an exemption request after testing has begun, any test(s) completed before the request is submitted will be scored and the results reported to the parent or guardian and will be included in the student’s records. If you wish to opt your student out of the CAASPP assessments, please follow the process listed below completely on or before February 16, 2018.

    4. Make an appointment to submit the form to your student’s principal.
    5. Meet with the principal.

  • Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment Blocks (IAB) to be given to 9th and 10th grade

    Dear Parents and/or Guardians:

    A team of Jefferson  Union High School District English teachers collaboratively developed and refined an English Language Arts (ELA) scope and sequence.  The purpose of this scope and sequence project is to:

    • Provide all of our students access to the same essential skills and content no matter the site or class to which they are assigned.
    • Allow enough time for students to learn the essential skills and concepts. 
    • Provide guides for new teachers entering the district or for teachers who are assigned new classes.

    A key part of this project is to see how well students are understanding the essential skills and concepts using the Smarter Balanced Interim Assessment Blocks (IAB). Your student will be taking the IAB in his/her English class on November 2, 2017. The test will be taken using a computer and  will take 1 period to administer.

    The results of this test can better inform our teachers on what instructional practices worked well and what can be improved and adjusted in instruction to meet the students’ academic needs. In addition, the experience from taking this test may serve as a practice for the Summative Test taken in your student’s 11th grade year. As a parent, you have the right to opt your student out of participating in this assessment. If you choose to opt out your student, please fill out the IAB opt out form and return to your student’s Vice-Principal of Guidance.
